November 2018 brings along several significant days for all to celebrate and participate. The first Saturday in November is National Children’s Day which promotes the rights of children. On 5 November is International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict, and the list goes on. There is Malaria Day, World Science Day for Peace and Development Resolution, International Day for Tolerance, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Poppy Day where people take time to remember the soldiers that died in WWI and WWII. Last but not least is the build up to the Xmas holidays and celebrations, and almost on our doorstep is 2019. Here are some events and entertainment you can look forward to this month:
- One Source Live – on 17 November 2018, Fox Street Johannesburg. Are you ready for an amazing day of fashion, photography and great music, kicking off with One Source Live festival. Multiple stages will be unfolding around African creativity with focus on positive change in the world. You can expect to see artists such as, the award winning BET Zulu rooted and global star S’JAVA; Hip-Hop maverick Shane Eagle and a host of other spectacular artists performing.
- Kaboom – 10 November 2018 at the Goodman Gallery. William Kentridge a world renowned Jozi based artist will present his latest exhibition that includes his drawings, and never before exhibiting his charcoal drawings that will be used for projection related to a new 3 channeled film related to the Head & The Load London performance.
- Polygraph – 18 October to 17 November 2018 at David Krut Projects, Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood. Once again Lorenzo Nassimbeni a well known architect and artist returns to David Krut Projects with a wonderful new exhibition that is envisioned as a self portrait using lens and lines of the City of Gold. As Nassimbeni’s travels through the city progress, each layer of lines integrates with grid-like drawings alluding to the chaotic energy of Joburg and the gentle and natural energy of Cape Town. The result is a new “language of line”.
- Art & Design -10 November 2018 in Keyes Ave, Rosebank. Visit Johannesburg’s most stylish design and art hub. A fabulous day for the whole family where you can enjoy special performances, screenings, exhibitions, talks and installations. This is what you can expect on the day:
– The Emporium
The Emporium is a monthly bespoke, luxury pop-up based at the Keyes Art Mile landmark Trumpet building that features a carefully selected collection of art and design creatives. This month The Emporium partners with Braamfontein’s interior design hub 99 Juta Street and showcases a selection of high-end interior designs by local makers, including the furniture and product designs.
– Offstage by Frances Goodman
Don’t miss the last chance to see Frances Goodman’s latest exhibition Offstage, a dazzling collection of portraits made entirely from sequins which closes today at SMAC Gallery.
– Old Masters / New Realities Walkabout at TMRW Gallery
Join artists Wayner Barker and Lady Skollie for a walkabout of their latest digital art and virtual reality exhibition at TMRW Gallery. The duo will be reflecting on their creative practice, their engagement with technology, and their conceptual vision in the creation of the work on show which takes the works of old masters JH Pierneff and Gerard Sekoto as a starting point. Wayne Barker walkabout at 10:00, Lady Skollie walkabout at 12:00.
